A few interesting facts about DDGS and ethanol production.
- DDGS supply is most definitely up to the demand — in South Dakota and across the country. Nationally, in order to meet clean air standards, it is projected that 7.5 billion gallons of ethanol will be required by 2012, resulting in 14 million metric tons of DDGS. (Source: University of Illinois.)
- In North America, over 80% of DDGS is used in ruminant diets. DDGS also is fed to poultry. Recent studies show excellent nutritional value of DDGS in swine diets, and its use is increasing in the pork industry.
- Every 56 lb. bushel of corn used in the dry grind ethanol process yields 18 lbs. of DDGS — an excellent source of energy and protein for livestock and poultry.
- Every bushel of corn produced in the wet mill ethanol process creates 13.5 lbs. of corn gluten feed and 2.6 lbs. of high-protein gluten meal.
- Feeding DDGS helps dairy producers hold costs down. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, dairy feed prices have declined since the beginning of 2007, thanks in large part to many producers feeding their livestock nutritious DDGS. As a direct result, milk income received by farmers has increased 52 percent from July 2006 to May 2007.
